Ernie : Einstein definitely was a leader. He was seriously offered the presidency of the new state of Israel, he was that much identified among Jews ( plus many others ) as a real-world leader. Not just among physicists. He was anti-war , at least until WWII, and during WWI was one of the few anti-war doves in that country, for which he gained international acclaim. He led a protest movement against German involvement in the conflict. At first an anti-Zionist, in time he became a leader in the Zionist movement. He also was, in physics, needless to say ( usually ) a visionary and it is with good reason that people have referred to the A-Bomb as Einstein's brainchild. It was his influence with FDR that got the Manhattan Project off the ground. Yes, I'd call him a leader. Especially in physics, but it wasn't just a matter of hard science even if, for sure, in that field he was a leader par excellence.
