Ernie : For the most part, by far, I agree with Self's essay. Really wish he was part of Centroids, he'd be a perfect match for the group. But, this said, what he misses is the inescapability of culture clash and making some strong stands on particular issues. The spirit in which he writes is all for the good, but is his the only way to look at social / values issues ? As Protestant as I usually am, about sin I take a very Catholic view. That is, there are venial and mortal sins, these are not equal and the Bible makes these kinds of distinctions itself. And obviously, to Catholics ( regardless of failings of the institutional Church ) priority must be given to combating mortal sins. Otherwise you get a reductio absurdum in which shoplifting is regarded as important as rape or murder. The in-betweens are where the problems usually are found, but you get the idea. So, about a couple of Self's views, I take exception, in one case very strong exception. But, otherwise he is on the money.
