Ernie: On that issue the best that occurs to me is a policy that equally ( or some semblance of it ) targets a variety of groups. Viz, black people, Arabs, Chinese, and "suspicious looking" white folks. To take the last case, Arizona has more than its fair share of skinheads, neo-Nazis, NSM idiots, and the like, many of whom are serious troublemakers, The cops might ask for IDs from "Aryans" as well as from Hispanics. Which is not a joke since they just might pick up miscellaneous illegal East Europeans or, say, neo-Fascist Aussies or Canadians. Anyway, either we are serious about securing the borders or we are not. To attempt any such thing requires profiling. The Israelis know exactly this and have an even greater need to secure their borders than we do. As a matter or routine they profile everyone entering their country. Result, and despite many really serious attempts to breach security, so far, a very safe system. Does anyone "like" profiling who has friends in a profiled group ? Of course not, but life is what it is, and the alternative is a more dangerous country to live in. I'm half German and in the past Germans have been profiled in the USA, both in WWI and in WWII. Any reasonable German-American would have expected it, and maybe even demanded it. Because, of all people, they would understand just how evil some other Germans could be. Hell, a lot of Germans in the USA, speaking of WWII, had escaped from Der Vaterland precisely to get away from other Germans who threatened their lives. So, yeah, keep the bad Germans out, and that cannot be done without profiling. Exact same principle applies now. Especially given the huge crime wave now extant all across the border, with cities like Juarez and Tijuana war zones for about a decade already. Not to mention what illegal immigration does to American jobs and the labor market. Ask me about Arizona, where I lived for nearly all of the 90s. Do I like some Mexicans ? You bet, some could not possibly be better as people. As long as they are here LEGALLY, no problem. But to excuse illegal immigration, hell, I'm all for shooting everyone who crosses into the USA under those circumstances. Don't take me too literally, but to express my strong negative sentiments on the subject. Prevent them from getting into the country using all available means, and if they still enter and are found out, make their experience so negative that they not only would be glad to get back to Mexico, they would discourage all others from any attempt to do the same. This has got to stop., not just slow down , but altogether made to end. If it takes militarizing the border, go for it. Get the job done. Wouldn't the many in the Hispanic community protest.? Sure. And that would tell the rest of us where their real loyalties are, and that being the case, send them back to Mexico. And if the Mexican gvt complains, well, let them know that if their system wasn't so corrupt and dysfunctional there wouldn't be a border problem. Or a hideous crime problem. Maybe they might finally become honest about everything that is wrong with Mexico and start to fix their own problems. Just maybe this would allow us to reclaim Los Angeles for America, our very own squalid third world city, the shame of the USA. I remember how nice LA used to be, in the 1980s. What is it now ? Hell on Earth, a filthy pit, at least in a good number of areas. Because of whom ? We all know the answer. LA is a disgrace and to allow it to remain a disgrace is inexcusable. My grandparents jumped through every imaginable hoop to get into the USA legally, a process that took several years and required a responsible sponsor willing to vouch for them when they got here and willing to take legal responsibility until they became citizens. Excellent system and the sooner we return to exactly that kind of system the better. Personally I am really fed up with illegals who think more of Mexico --or Yemen or Syria or you-name-it -- than they do of America. We ought to welcome everyone who enters this country legally with all the hospitality possible, with genuine helpfulness. For all the others, as I said, "shoot 'em."
