True, but it had the advantage that I didn't have to try and restore a
boot sector.  These were virtual machine images with a partition table
and BIOS bootloader to worry about.

In the end it's looking like I'll have to blow away the image and
restore it from the .vhd image I have as the VMs seem reluctant to
start, so something is fishy with the set-up.  (Or something is buggy
with the flashcache set up I'm using it with.  Time for experiments
methinks.)
