Since RADOSgw is a FastCGI module, can one scale it by just adding
more HTTP servers behind a load-balancer?
Yes, that's the way it works. Simply add more machines when you need to.
Then would it be better to co-locate RADOSgw servers with OSDs in the
same machine (say, we buy larger/fatter nodes), or would it be better
to have a cluster of separate "thin" RADOSgw servers?
You can run RGW on the same machines as the OSD, no problem. There is no
"better" way, but you just have to be aware that both services are
running on the same machine.
Most deployments I've done had separate RGW machines though.
Thanks,
Riccardo
