As I understand it it wouldn't matter. The law/custom applies to his guests
(and animals) as well.
I think the general original spirit probably would have allowed the use of
automobiles for short trips as they are not other livings beings and the
short trip in them is neither a hardship or really work (unless you're
caught in city traffic).
(Then again, the way I read it suggests sitting around all sat watching
football with your buds and family is pretty much just what you're supposed
to do. It's just the high sabbaths that are a bit more demanding.)
