A loss of $30M they may be able to handle. What they can't handle is
continuing losses and the wrath of shareholders if it keeps up. I'm not
saying this has been a problem with Allaire - in fact, they posted a
profitable quarter rather quickly for a young company. If it keeps up,
however, they'll be forced to find ways to become profitable, such as
firing product developers and researchers.

I'm glad I don't hold any Allaire stock, if only because of the
conflicting emotions I'd have to deal with as a CF developer. If you
want the stock to do well, you may find yourself hoping they can cut
costs and increase profits so that the stock doesn't become worthless.
As a CF developer, though, knowing the measures they might have to take
could be very unpalatable. Best case scenario: they get it in gear and
start producing products that are both profitable for the company and a
step forward for us web developers.

Oh, and I hope I don't offend anyone by saying Allaire is most
definitely NOT a dot com. Not any more than Cisco is, even though their
fortunes are very much tied into the future of the Internet.

You must be joking.

Dude, Allaire ain't going nowhere. They can handle a $30M net quarterly
loss.

And frankly, compared to the losses that most dot-coms rack up, that one
is pretty small.

(by the way, this is really a discussion for the CF-Community list, so
I've cross-posted there should anyone like to continue this discussion)

Regarding how CF compares to any other development platform, after
nearly 4 years of development, no one I know of has ever bench marked
two identical applications on different development platforms with each
other. So to just broadly say that ANY platform out performs ANY other
would be a rather silly statement without some sort of proof.
