"Microsoft technicians have been struggling since early Wednesday morning to
return service to the company's main websites: Microsoft.com, MSN.com,
MSNBC.com, WindowsMedia.com, Encarta.com and Carpoint.com. "
"The company's U.S. websites appeared to be the victim of a problem with DNS
routing, the database that translates the names of URLs to the actual number
addresses of the servers where the Web pages are stored. "
"A company spokesman confirmed that "some" Microsoft websites were down due
to problems with Microsoft's own Domain Name System (DNS) servers, and said
the company was working as quickly as it could to solve the problem"
"Since Microsoft's U.S. pages were accessible via this method, it would
indicate that Microsoft was not suffering from a cracker attack such as a
denial of service -- which would have made the sites totally inaccessible --
but instead had internal problems with its own DNS routing. "
