I currently use Microsoft Money Deluxe and Business. I like it because it features
time and billing (invoicing) and a plethora of other utilities for personal finances.
I wouldn't recommend it for a business that has employees, but for a sole proprietor,
I think it's great. I've also used Quick Books Pro. I think it's safe to say that
overall MS Money gives you more bang for the buck.
In my previous life as an accountant (over 4 years ago) I setup many different kinds
of accounting systems. I recall that Dac Easy was pretty powerful for the money and
at the time it was one of the only off-the-shelf packages that offered true GAAP
standard accounting. Most of the off-the-shelf packages around now are not GAAP
standard.
Peachtree is an equivalent software package to the others I described. SAGE is really
intended for businesses with more complex accounting structures - such as those with
employees.
As far as payroll goes - I recommend that you outsource it. It's a heck of a lot
easier than dealing with it on your own and it's worth the price. Your employees will
thank you for it. Besides that, a place that outsources normally takes care of the
taxes and keeps abreast of all the changes in tax and employment laws.
Whichever software you choose, make sure you read up on the features and understand
the differences between the various versions of each piece of software. It would also
be a good idea to ask your accountant's recommendation. If you don't have an
accountant - get one. They're worth every dollar you spend on them for the same
reason as outsourcing your payroll.
