Well the ol' community forum is just a hoppin'!
Talk of money will always do that. Perhaps I should subscribe my
employer to this list so they can get a better idea of just how
gosh-darn valuable I am. ;)
Hal Helms seems to have succinctly summarized the state of the
industry. Yes, this is low tide and the high tide will come back. In
keeping with the sea analogy, eventually the majority of the ocean is
'level'. We've seen this in telecommunications, engineering, chemicals
(Plastic, the future is plastic...) etc. We are people with
specialized skills, so we will always be in demand and at wages far
higher than the national averages income (except for me, I'm working
on that).
Speaking of wages certainly isn't price-fixing. Even the government
publishes salary information based on national and regional averages.
If we were to align our wage requests with those reports would be the
government be colluding in price fixing? Of course not. Just as
Michael said, a quorum of us would have to agree to maintain a certain
level of wage request to qualify for price-fixing. Well, I alone
undermine that! Worry not CF Folks, my $15/hr job (yes, fifteen!
Canadian even!) saves us all from that horror. It's a sacrifice but
I'm willing to do that for you, my brethren.
Sidebar: Hey, I like the community, am passionate about conservation
and that's a respectable wage in this town. Although, there are other
freelancers here charging in excess of $100/hr. I will be doing
likewise soon, on my own time for clients other than my primary
employer. Of course when I do that, it'll hit the fan at work as they
won't have any bargaining chips left.
Now, it's time for my morning coffee, which reminds me....Remember the
thread about cool coffee mugs and having coffee code on it? Well, your
little brother Guy has gone and done something about it. Using the
services of CafePress.com, I have designed a few cool 15 oz mugs for
developers. Proceeds go to me and my wife (a developer also) getting
more training, so we can get these high fallutin' jobs yer all talking
about..
