Most people referring to Internic mean Network Solutions (now merged
with/owned by Verisign). Tucows (via their OpenSRS operation) is another
ICANN approved registrar and operates mostly via a reseller model. We're an
OpenSRS reseller.

It should take less than a day to register a new domain. It sounds as if
you may have transfered registrars from Network Solutions to Tucows when you
renewed your domains. It can easily take several days, even a week, befor
the transfer completes. Tucows should mail the Administrative contact a
message instructing you to follow a link that takes you to a form on the
Tucows sight where you give your approval of the registrar transfer. The
domain absolutely will not transfer until this approval is given by the
domain's registered Administrative contact.

But... if a domain was registered with Network Solutions and was running OK,
with valid name servers that correctly answered queries for the domain, then
you should see _no_ disruption of service. The renewal and registrar
transfer are transparent. Did you let the domain names expire?
