This weekend the sun was shining and the air was warming up. The lake, which
last year had been all but dried up, was just slightly over capacity. So, I
decided to take my new boat out and have a spin.
The boat had just come out of the shop, having been tuned, and then
summerized to a pristine condition, as well as being polished and all the
Equipment checked at the shop. I was ready for a day of fun.
I started the boat up and listened to the engine for a moment. It seemed a
little rough, but the mechanic had told me it might for the first little
bit, and I gunned it up a little bit and headed out into the water. I was
planning on driving through the 'school zone' and entering the main part of
the lake to head over to Sneaky Pete's and have some lunch. About halfway
across the lake the engine started making some louder banging noises and I
slowed down so I could take a look at the engine.
Once stopped I lifted the cover and SMOKE started pouring out of the engine
compartment. I quickly checked the dip stick, and wouldn't you know it...
the mechanics had left her almost bone dry of oil! But the worst was yet to
come...
With the engine off, and almost no other boats in the water at all, it was
very quiet. And so I was able to hear the sound... A very faint sound, but
unmistakable... the sound of water leaking INTO my boat!
I looked down into the hold, and there it was... Water RUSHING in through
where the outdrive boot SHOULD HAVE BEEN! I turned on the pumps, but it
wasn't going to do the job! The engine was having problems, but this was an
even bigger problem! I tried signaling for help, but there was no one
around. I tried the radio... Damn, not working! I knew I had some oil for
emergencies, and this was nothing if not an emergency.
I quickly put the three quarts of oil I kept around in the engine, said "To
hell with it" and stoked the engine till she actually started! And drove the
boat towards shore until I saw a marina. As I came into the Marina I yelled
to some dock men that I was sinking and you should have seen them RUN!
Soon the crane was attached and I was being hefted up. I, and the boat were
saved...
Just thought some might want to see they didn't have it so bad this
weekend...
