Personally, I think it's a genuine concern. I know how much time _I_ waste
with email. :-) If I've got a project that absolutely has to be finished,
the first thing I do is close the email client and vow not to open it up for
N hours.
More and more workers, in all types of businesses are using email. This is
good, as it's an effective means of communication for many tasks. We're
talking about the non-productive ones as well as the productive ones, dumb
workers and brilliant ones. Oh, and _hourly_ workers as well... where time
IS money. Overtime? It costs you time-and-a-half, or maybe double-time on
holidays.
Take a look at another angle of your "overtime" argument. Someone wastes 5
hours a week on frivolous email, so he has to work 45 hours to get 40 hours
of work done. He's more stressed, more tired. Worse, he thinks he's giving
the company something extra in working that overtime, when in reality he's
just f**king around more.

line here or maybe it's because it's such a nice day today that I don't want
to be here and I'm in a bad mood. Whatever the reason, here it goes...

trying to squeeze every second out of an employee that they're losing site
of the more important things in life. Those more important things in life,
in my opinion, are taking care of employees, who in return, take care of the
employer. Now, before all you manager types out there get into a hissy and
start explaining that time is money, blah, blah, blah, think about this from
another angle. Let's say John Doe spends 1 hour per day reading non
work-related emails. Now let's say that John Doe is already giving the
company an average of 5 hours of overtime per week (I don't know about all
of you, but 5 hours ot is on the low end). Doesn't that equal itself out?
Now take the stress and lack of sleep while John Doe is working 12-15 hour
days for 2 weeks (including weekends) to get the latest project done. Is Mr.
Doe actually working 12-15 hours? No, because the more stress and less sleep
he gets, the less productive he is.

> Maybe I'm rambling here, but it makes me mad that somebody actually wasted
*their* time doing that study. That doesn't seem very productive. :-) I
heard that some other countries actually have laws against working over 40
hours per week. Is this true? Now, I don't believe in babying employees
either. I could care less about the "cool" atmosphere that so many people
are clamering for. I don't need the scooter, the pool tables, the massage
therapists, and all those other "perks". It just seems that we're being over
productive, making a lot of money, but we don't have any time to enjoy the
fruits of our labor. And who knows what it's doing to our health.

> Whew, I feel better now. Does anybody have a comment or want to elaborate?
I've only wasted 30 minutes of my time going through email today so I still
have another 30 minutes to give. :-)
