I created and support the intranet for our business unit (roughly 600 people
days + the shift folks since we're a 24/7/365 plant). The web stuff is only
part of my job. But we want to web enable some existing apps, and develop
some new ones.

We have a small, schizo IT staff - 1.5 applications people (and .5 boss
<g>), 1 network guru, 1 net admin / help person, 2 techs.

My background dates back to the IBM mainframe COBOL and Assembler days.
Then, on to dBase/FoxPro/Clipper, then MS Access, now client-server, moving
towards web.

Most of my job is business applications programming - mainly support and
enhancement, some development. Almost all of the back ends are in Oracle.
Do some dba stuff there. Most of the front ends are in PowerBuilder. Some
of the stuff I have to support is in Access, and a lot of that is really
complicated with bubble-gum VBA beating up linked Oracle tables <g>.

I use CF mainly to drill into Oracle databases to slice & dice business data
and produce Crystal Reports. Am starting to learn to use cf_mail. Have
nobody here who knows CF - former boss decided it was the "best solution"
for cost-effective web development, said "here, learn this". Between Ben
Forta's wonderful CF WACK book, the CF examples, and lurking on cf-talk for
a long time, I've gotten a few things working. My supervisor wants me to
teach him whatever I learn, so we both know. (He's teaching me
PowerBuilder.)

Isn't there a curse "may you live in interesting times"? (But it's better
than being bored, and I don't have to work a lot of overtime. We just try
to give people realistic estimates of when they can have things.) As an
example, right now I'm working on some minor enhancements to a contract
tracking system, minor mods to our payroll front-end, adding new "recipes"
to a system that has to do with gas/diesel specs and environmental
compliance, helping several users with problems in db's where the authors
are no longer here, and oh by the way talking about a new cf app which will
generate email when certain things happen. <s-i-g-h>

Subject: Roles

I am just kinda curious what type of different roles people here play. Do
you do the programming, web layout, system admin, db admin, managers...or
are the functions split up, that kinda of stuff.
I am just trying to learn different ways people have their group/team.
Trying to get the most out of people without stretching them to thin....

Me, I do everything which in my mind is too much...I'd like someone to
handle the content and someone else handle the db admin...so I can focus on
the apps themselves.......

Whats your team like?
