My gym has 2 bikes and 2 cross trainers with a monitor and Internet access.
The company that provided the service (NetPulse) went out of business a few
months ago but the Internet connection still works. Most of the time at
least 2 of the 4 pieces of equipment are available, so it hasn't been wildly
popular.
I've used them occasionally. Mostly to check my sites on another browser
(seems to be close to IE5 compatible). I found it a nice way to pass the
time but not particularly productive. Opening a new browser window splits
the screen so you can see a little of each. Navigation can be tricky and
data input - being all touch screen - is frustrating.
The idea was (until the company went out of business) that you log on each
time and build points that you can use for shopping. I never got that far.
You are also subjected to lots of ads the whole time. The brower is running
in a U-shaped frame. The left and right sides of the screen are control
menus. You can show/hide them if you want. The bottom is a stream of
continuous ads.
In addition to Internet you can also get cable TV. Each monitor has a jack
for a headphone. You can also play a CD.
