It used to be the opinion of confirmed NFL stat geniuses(like me!) that 
interceptions are so debilitating that a QB should always be willing to 
"eat it" when things go bad. I'm not so sure anymore. I do believe that the 
smart "throwaway" is a talent that can be cultivated with proper training. 
This is a real pet peeve of Bill Parcells. You could see his blood pressure 
elevate before your eyes when one of his QB's took what he thought was a 
bad sack.

Frankly, I think O'Brien might well have been better than Namath. Namath's 
OL was better, though O'Brien's receivers may have been better(Wesley 
Walker, Al Toon, etc).
