YES. i just researched this A LOT. we had twins and i wanted a cam
beforehand. i looked at sony, JVC, canon. but i have to say i like sony
products, i like the memory stick concept, etc. so i might be a little
biased.
i bought the sony TRV-11. it's mini-DV and relatively inexpensive.
i have a PC, a Vaio laptop, AND a mac. i can connect the cam to any of them
with firewire.
it is a FANTASTIC camera. it takes stills at 640x480 but they're great for
emailing and the web. the quality of the video is OUTSTANDING. i highly
recommend it.
if you want stills at 1150x768 get the next model up - TRV-20.
buy it using mysimon.com. the TRV-11 retails for $1299 but i got it for
$949. i spent $1450 total after leather case, advanced starter kit (32MB
memory stick, longer battery, lenses, etc) and an extended warranty. if
nothing else, get the 5-hour battery. the default 2-hour is not that great.
i can fit 340 or so stills on the 32MB memory stick that came with the
advanced kit. not every place sells these kits. that was key for me.
also...the firewire port on the sony camcorder is 4pin which is a sony
thing. firewire cards are 6pin. sony cables are 4-4pin and expensive ($40).
go to buy.com and buy a $15 4-6pin cable from orange micro.
i've made movies using adobe premiere already. it's awesome. the TRV-11 also
came with a remote...it's great. i read the whole manual before i really got
into it. the digital effects are fantastic.
i can't say enough great things about it.
