Our process works like this:

Initial contacts: Sales and marketing only
Meeting to discuss proposal: Sales, and senior developer if complex
technical issues exist
(the sales staff here is fairly tech savvy, so they only need help
discussing new or complex issues)

Due Diligence Kickup (Sales Rep, Creative Director, Project Manager, the
development team leader assigned to the project. QA manager (so they know
what the project is supposed to end up as), and any other staff members
that need to be involved at this stage - artists, programmers, dba, etc..
This meeting gets everyone on the same page about all aspects of the project.

Production design and planning meetings as needed - if the programmer has a
question that can best be answered by the client, we'll invite the client
to the meetings.

We don't isolate our clients from the staff, and as CTO, but also as a
developer, I have constant contact with clients in all stages of the project.
