SWF files use 2D animation techniques upon pre-rendered assets; more info here: "3D Approaches in the Macromedia Flash and Shockwave Players" http://www.macromedia.com/go/14650 It's the Shockwave Player that TurboSquid resources work most closely with... you can bring this 3D geometry into the browser and have it render in realtime, from any angle and lighting and so on. By the way, if you haven't seen the recent Shockwave material, it's amazing... best way to do clientside manipulation and visualization of data, bar none.
