Summary: If you have existing sites that use QuickTime-in-browser then
reading Apple's new material is helpful.
Background: A recent IE/Win 5.5 update and IE6/Win beta no longer support
Netscape Plugins. This has made plugin-only content such as QuickTime
unviewable in those browsers.
What has changed: Apple has released an ActiveX stub for these browsers.
Full info here:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/tutorials/activex.html
Action item: If you have existing sites that use QuickTime content, then
people in some of the newer IE/Win versions will no longer be able to see
it. If you replace the EMBED tag with the OBJECT/EMBED pair, per the Apple
docs above, then this will trigger the download & installation of a small
ActiveX shim for QuickTime content, and people in those browsers will be
able to view your work again. (This process does not require a
reinstallation of the QuickTime system extensions... it's a quick
auto-install.)
Q) Does this browser change affect Shockwave or Flash?
A) No, because both of these web players have been available as ActiveX
Controls for years.
Q) Is IE/Mac affected?
A) No, IE/Mac still uses Netscape Plugins, same as before. (Although there
was a specification for ActiveX on Macintosh, there have been very few
implementations.)
Q) How does this affect Dreamweaver customers?
A) Apple now recommends a nested OBJECT/EMBED structure to call either
NSPlugin or AXControl, similar to what we see for Shockwave or Flash. If
you have made pages with QuickTime content, then it would be good to
gradually update those pages to help people in newer IE/Win browsers.
Q) Does this affect QuickTime use in Shockwave?
A) No, because the Shockwave Player calls upon the QT system components
directly, and does not use the QuickTime browser plugin.
