I heard that patents for alternate engines and such were bought up by the
big car manufacturers and such so they could determine when  and if such
vehicles came to be so their fortunes would not be ruined.

I believe this is most likely an urban myth.  For two reasons.  One large secrets like that are nearly impossible to keep indefinably.  Soon or later something leaks.


Second.  Gas is a rather small percentage of the product mix that comes out of crude oil.  If cars that ran on water suddenly came out it would actually be a boon to the oil industry could they would make a fortune on the plastics to build the cars and the asphalt to build the ever more needed roads to handle all the traffic, ect.
