I usually use google. If you are working on questions like "what the heck is foo" you can't beat google for relevant results. For certain purposes though you may be interested in getting *every* result including those that may not be optimally coded. For instance, when I was coding up my father's family history research, I ran each name through vivisimo and alta vista to see if they were mentioned elsewhere.

Mostly vivisimo, which really shines at this sort of search. Let's say I am looking for "tierney". Vivisimo, for example, groups all results for Gene Tierney together and presents them as a single link. Since these are irrelevant for my purposes, this is that much less to wade through. It also could often recognize online family trees and group those together....
