Protected persons:-

"Article 31

No physical or moral coercion shall be exercised against protected
persons,in particular to obtain information from them or from third
parties."

(From "Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in
Time of War"; http://www.unhchr.ch/html/menu3/b/92.htm)

I also find very suspicious  the accused violators claimed that they
did not receive any training in the Geneva Protocols. In contrast I
became very familiar with the conventions when I was in basic
training with the Canadian military. We had about 20 hours of
classroom and a test on it afterwards. Thereafter we were issued
wallet sized copies of the protocols, that were printed for the US
Army.

Even so, it should have been obvious that what they were doing was
wrong. One of the accused was a prison guard in civilian life.
Although I find it interesting that he was also under restraining
orders in conjunction with a spousal abuse case. I can see that his
behavior humiliating and abusing his wife probably carried over to
the prison setting, with the tacit approval of the prison's command.
