with no age limit and groups are allowed

Well, they aren't looking for artists, they are looking for entertainers,
pop singers.
They aren't interested in song writing or the ability to play an instrument,
they want people who can sing different types of songs, and can do so fairly
regularly.
I liken these people to the scores of others like Brittany Spears, Jessica
Simpson, nsync, celene dion, and the rest of the singers, people who make it
on the voice and looks, but not that artistic talent of a song writer or a
true musician.

I saw the subject, AI and thought Artificial Intelligence.
Being a musician, I'm not a fan of American Idol. I believe it gives
people the wrong idea of what it takes to be successful in the music
industry.
Their intent is to make good television, not find the next star. Many of
the contestants chosen to audition for the show are chosen just so Simon
has something to cut down. ( Given many of the clips I've heard from
earlier episodes of any given season, I'm sure many will agree a lot of the
singers on there are horrible).
The singer in my band, however, appears to be quite fond of the show.
