Back in the mid 70s I took a world history class. The professor was an
immigrant from one of the (then) Soviet provinces. He told us it was only a
matter of time until the Soviet Union would collapse and split apart because
it was a fragile federation of fragmented peoples who couldn't stand each
other being held together with an iron fist. We thought he was nuts.
