Bottom line is that while a fetus is a potential for life, it is not life
separate from the mother and certain actions can be taken against it in the
mothers interest. That being said, there is no acceptance of 'abortion on
demand' in Judaism for factors of convenience. Of course, this is all tied up in
religion so the people who would get abortions are the people who usually should
not be having sex yet.

On a related note, a biblical reference to a man causing a woman to abort a
fetus shows that he is required to pay a fine, not his life as may be required
based on circumstance.
