My fiancé has been a vegetarian since we were in high school and she is not
against killing animals for food per se, but rather she's against the means
by which the animals are treated prior to their slaughter. Often times
chickens are mass bred and stored in boxes where they never move an inch or
two. The veal industry is even worse; baby calves are often chained in pens
and not given any food from their mother in order to preserve their "white"
meat, they literally become anemic. I used to shrug it off as "who cares,
the animals die anyway" but after reading some of the stories and books on
the subject I find myself buying meat products from places that do not
support that kind of treatment: around here Whole Foods / Fresh Fields has a
good selection. Her stance is actually the stance of many more vegetarians
than the "though shall not kill animals" stance.
