Metaphorically speaking he was really raked over the coals.

Actually the members of the Judiciary committee (I was able to listen to the
rest of it later on - love C-Span radio) were really critical. Ashcroft was
very evasive and ended up refusing to release the memos. This prompted the
chair to say he will be looking into citing Ashcroft for contempt.
