One silly thing to try would be to clean the handset and base station
terminals with alcohol.  Sometimes grime can build up and screw up the
charging process.  It's possible, but you don't strike me as a particularly
grimy person so I doubt it'll help.  ;^)

I would probably just chalk it up as a lemon and see if you could get a new
battery under warranty.  Depending on the company you might have good luck.
You might go down to Radio Shack and buy a new battery, try it for a day and
see if it helps then return it.  If it does help then it's the battery, if
not then it's the phone.
