If the Operating System was MS Windows there is a program on
www.download.com called getdataback . there are 2 versions, one for ntfs
partitions and one for fat/fat32 partitions.
As an example of what the program can do:
I had a client tell me they had a current backup of all their data so I
reimaged their hardrive. The drive was repartitioned, windows 2000 loaded
and about 30 software programs. I connected the hdd as a slave on another
system, loaded the getdataback on that system, it then attempts to read the
data of the drive and if it can be read it can usually restore it.
I was able to retrieve about 3GB of data off the drive. everything except
their email file because they had already setup email and was downloading
into the same directory location as their old email directory.
The other stipulation to this is a actual physically bad area of the HDD.
Then that data will not be readable/salvageable either.

If Windows OS is just hosed and unable to boot up but you think the drive is
mostly ok , you can go to www.apricorn.com and purchase a PCMCIA ez-gig
card and the pigtail for about $60.00 dollars. Install the PCMCIA card, hook
the HDD to it,you can then read the contents of the drive(from another
working laptop) and copy them to a system then do a data transfer after
reloading the Operating System.

http://www.drivesavers.com/ is a well known company that does HDD data
recovery.
