One factor I would look at is the relative anonymity of communication on-line allows anyone to take on alternate personalities if they so choose.  Since all one knows about a person online is what they type, it is fairly easy to create something different then what a person is in real life.  


I would say if your are communicating with somebody who is being honest with you and themselves then you can get a very good idea of what they would be like, but if that person chooses to fool you and paint a different picture then somebody may be in for a rude awakening if a real-life meeting occurs.
