Sony does make a profit on its hardware - and has for many years now (since
the Rev 2 board I believe).
Also as Gel said each Xbox sold needs to match with a DOZEN titles sold for
profitability - and that's so very far from actual buying habits that it's
not even worth aiming for.
Multiple Consoles owners will always gravitate towards a single unit - I'm
definitely PS2 prone (mostly because the dual shock is just so damn
comfortable) and I'll, personally, buy most cross-platform games for the
PS2. The Cube is relegated almost exclusively to my five-year old's use and
the Xbox gets moderate use, but nothing near the PS2.
I played "Crimson Skyies" on the box - great game, but not really my
favorite kind of game but then I played "Transformers", "Primal", "Onimusha
2", Onimusha 3" and "Final Fantasy X-2" on the PS2 - all of which are
stunning.
Quite simply I've been disappointed more by the Xbox than any other console:
great graphics only cover mediocre gameplay for so long. Of course
personally I don't play any sports or driving games and I rarely have the
time to dig into online games so I'm not a very well-defined target consumer
for the Xbox.
