My feeling is that you pay a huge markup. Now, if you are not too hardware
inclined and want a hassle free computer buy a prebuilt machine with a
warranty. If you are into hobbying with it, build it yourself. You will save
hundreds of dollars and can get top of the line components; whereas a lot of
pre fab systems come with some good components but also junk.

Also,a warranty is nice, but the truth of the matter is that unless it pays
shipping for the return of parts, you can look forward to shelling out $50
to ship a monitor, $30-$40 to ship a tower, etc... When I buy components, I
get individual warranties on the components and always have some crappy
spares laying around in case I need to send something in (happened once with
an ATI gfx card).

I am just a huge fan of saving money, learning about hardware, and being
able to choose the best components for the $.
