Yes, the ethical implications of GMail have been discussed here a bit.
I read that gmail is too creepy site, which, for the record, I don't buy
at all. Most of their arguments are totally lame. My favorite part was
about the inappropriate ad placement of GMail and Google in general.
Coming from Yahoo! Mail, where they know my age and gender, and decide
to show me nothing but womens' torsos and butts and thighs and huge
400x600px ads for the South Beach Diet, I don't really care much about
the "inappropriate ad placement." I'm just glad that GMail hasn't yet
told me that I'm fat.
Though, I suppose if I tell my friends via email that I think I'm fat,
those ads, albeit in text, may come back :-)
