Interview: Palestine Media Center on Palestinian death threats to the AP

Aaron Lerner Date: 13 September 2001
IMRA interviewed Mohamed Aghawani of the Palestinian Authority's Palestine
Media Center, in English, on 13 September, 2001.

IMRA: When is the Palestinian Authority going reassure the Associated Press
that Fatah Tanzim won't murder people on the AP staff if they release the
footage of Palestinians celebrating the attacks against the USA?

Aghawani: Are you sure that the Tanzim said explicitly that they would
murder anyone?

IMRA: Let's put it this way, Ahmed Abdel Rahman, Arafat's Cabinet
secretary, told the AP that the Palestinian Authority "cannot guarantee the
life" of the cameraman if the footage was broadcast.

If I tell you that I cannot guaranty your life if you do something then what
does that mean?

Aghawani: That's right. I understand the situation. The problem is that
until now, as far as I know, the President's Office and the Ministry of
Information are going to deal with the problem. And as far as I know this
problem is going to be solved for the benefit of the journalists. That is
what I am expecting. And I am sure that there will be nothing of what you
just said. We are expecting to receive information from the Minister or the
President's Office.
