I would think that lat/long would be a lot more precise than zip code, which is essentially the addresses serves by a single post office. In the rural west a zip code can be quite big -- even the city of Santa Fe is a single zip code, or was three or four years ago. Nor does it have a major airport though... the only one in NM is in Albuqueruque.
