Eric-
We USED to have air force bases and fighter jets.
These were deemed necessary in the days of Soviet bomber aircraft.
There no longer is a Soviet Union, and Russia no longer has a credible
long-range bomber fleet.
It's all missles.
Ya can't shoot down a missle with a figher jet.
So of course they closed most of the bases and dismantled the active-duty
fighter wings.
All ya got is Air National Guard, and a few tactical bases.
Believe the closest one to DC is Langley, at Hampton VA.
But unless you have crews sitting in the cockpits of "hot" aircraft on ready
alert, no hope...

I realize there are no gates. I was hoping that there would be some sort of
airborn countermeasure to prevent such a thing (wing of fighterjets).

Restricted yes... but no gates in the air. If you really wanted to fly
into restricted air space, nothing will stop you.
