Sorry - I was trying to make my own joke and failed.  ;^)  It's just that
the Pops playing on the 4th is a huge tradition in Boston: doesn't everybody
on earth know what's going on in Boston?  Aren't we the hub of the universe
(another tradition we have)?  ;^)

The pops concerts are great - but remember that they are "Pops" - as in
popular music.  There's actually very little "classical" music.  Since John
Williams used to conduct there's usually a ton of his movie stuff ("Star
Wars", "Indiana Jones", etc) and other well-known tunes.

However there are tons of free events on the Esplanade - the Hatch Shell is
open (there are no seats - you sit or stand on the grass).  A complete
calendar (on a really crappy website) is here: http://www.hatchshell.org
<http://www.hatchshell.org/>

Basically there's something for everybody - although I did lie, it doesn't
look like the Pops will be playing there again this year.  When we lived on
Beacon Hill we used to go down there a lot, not so much anymore.

No, it's not a joke.  One of the things I definitely want to do when I have
some spare cash and time is to go to more classical concerts.  Getting to
see the Pops for free ,sans the crowd, must be a treat indeed.
