I used to work for a motorsports web site "back in the day", iRACE,
for anyone that was surfing motorsports sites back in '97-'98, and
I've worked on projects involving public affairs fpr one of the Big 3
US auto manufacturers since then...so I feel qualified to comment on
NASCAR's popularity.

NASCAR doesn't "get" network television coverage...NASCAR has a
network television deal because it draws television viewers, plain and
simple.  If nobody watched NASCAR, it would probably be on Speed
Channel with F1, Rally and the like.

The other forms of motorsport, at least in the US, don't have similar
television deals because they don't draw viewers.  CART used to get
decent ratings, but then the whole open wheel debacle happened.  The
NHRA has a decent deal, with the races at least being broadcast
same-day on either ESPN or ESPN2.

What makes NASCAR so popular? Got me maybe its the flashy colors on
the cars? I am guessing it is mainly b/c its american and thats how
american, in a very broad and stereotypestatement, are with
entertainment. If its not home grown we tend to pass it off as 2nd
rate programing. I would also venture to say thatthe fact that NASCAR
gets Network braodcasting and the rest do not makes a huge difference
too.
