In recent western history: partnership contracts since the 1989 in Western Europe and Scandinavie, marriage since 2001 in the Netherlands and 2003(?) in Belgium, with many Western European and Scancdinavian countries (and Spain) expected to follow this or next year.
In old history: for all the reasons Jim Davis has listed the meaning of marriage has changed so much that I don't think it is relevant.
