Mazda coupe just isn't up to the task. But when I look at vehicles
they have various rated tow capacities and I have no clue what they
amount to.
So what will a 1000lb towing capacity give me the ability to tow?
1500? 2000? 3500?
I've tried looking stuff up with Google, but all I see is complex
explanations of things like tongue and axle weights. Even the sites
that talk about trailers don't seem to list the weight of the trailer,
just the gross axle weight and the tongue weight. And they list
categories and recommendations that don't seem to match up with what
the car manufacturer's say.
For instance, they'll say that a Class I trailer is good for smaller
and compact cars and can tow up to 2000lbs. But most cars I look at
have manufacturer's specs that explicitly say not to tow. And even
many small SUVs, according to their manufacturers, have towing
capacities of 1000lbs. Are they measuring towing capacities
differently? They say that Category III at 5,000lbs is appropriate for
SUVs, but most SUV specs I look at top out at 3,500lbs towing
capacity. What gives?.
What class would be appropriate for a trailer that can haul some
lumber including 20 16' 2x8s?
