The only time I've been stung was when I was 17 by a yellowjacket while working in the fields at a tree farm. When I got home, my father went balllistic. I had been stung on the earlobe, which had swollen up, and he insisted he would not have any son of his wearing an earing, so I had better get packing!
It took a good day to convince him it was a non-permanent mark, and not an infected piercing.
