I'm sure you could offer him less, in cash, and get an extended warranty
from the manufacturer if you needed?

Warranties never stopped me from a good deal - though - saying that - we
did need to use Phil's warranty on his laptop when we first moved. He
broke the display in transit. Dell came TO the house and replaced it. 48
hours after calling it in. Lovely service.
