Critter has talked a lot about the "why" of it for him. I think for a
lot of people, it's about power and control - overcoming your fears.
There's a lot of info out there about it. It's not something that a
newbie should just go out and do without a lot of support from those
that have gone before. But, apparently, it's something of a religious
experience for a lot of folk.

I used to self-mutilate, back in the teen years. I can attest to the
rush that you can get by pushing your body to its limits, and slightly
beyond. Hm...that sounds a lot like D & S thoughts, too.
