gates of one of the Bergen Belsen complex. They were supporting a
British commando unit in the expectation that the SS guards would
resist. By February 1945 many of the soldiers knew about some of the
camps at least.
Dad told me that after the camp was taken from the territorials who
were guarding the camps - the SS guards bravely ran away - the local
mayor and his wife were taken through the camp then released outside
of it. They killed themselves that night.
My father and his unit spent the next two weeks transporting the camp
survivors to nearby Canadian army hospitals.
