Years ago there was a social psych experiment where the residents of a
concrete block of an apartment building placed photos of themselves on
their balconies and outside doors. Suddenly people were not anonymous
strangers anymore, vandalism went down, and a lot of other pro social
behaviors went up, significantly so. How we act in those situations
where we're anonymous can also explain things like road rage etc. Its
much easier to ascribe an accidental thoughtless behavior to hostility
and maliciousness when we are anonymous.
In terms of this list, as we become to know each other (as what's been
happening at things like CFUN and MAX etc), and can attach faces to
names etc, I would not be surprised if many will moderate their more
extreme positions.

Find out what the poster really intended. The very nature of email can obscure the meaning or the intent of the poster. In a spoken discussion, you could read the emotional intent of my words. You would know if I'm saying this with anger, seriousness, sadness, or in a light tone of voice. Sometimes I type in something and mean it as nothing more than a harmless joke -- but the person reading it sees it as far more serious, perhaps thinks that I'm making fun of him or her. Or he or she may take me far more seriously than I do. And the humor falls flat because I'm not able to convey the emotion effectively. (Smiley faces are a poor substitute for a smile.)
