(2) A wound is defined as an injury to any part of the body from an outside
force or agent sustained under one or more of the conditions listed above. A
physical lesion is not required, however, the wound for which the award is
made must have required treatment by a medical officer and records of
medical treatment for wounds or injuries received in action must have been
made a matter of official record.

Are you suggesting that someone must lose a limb or some kind of major
trauma in order to get a purple heart?

No offense Sam, but this would be like me directing you to Fahrenheit 9/11
for my sources. One thing I don't get is that Kerry's had shipmates around
him praising his actions in Vietnam, but somehow we're listening to other
people who haven't been proven to be around Kerry at that time.
