Are you sure he was never there?
My father (who served two tours in Vietnam) used to deny any US incursions into Cambodia. It was official policy. That's how he looked at it.
After his first reunion trip (11ACR "Blackhorse") he started telling stories about missions into Cambodia (many others too that he had kept bottled up for ~20 years), had maps and etc. to prove he was there, stuff he had kept in a locked trunk that had moved with us every post we went to. He men in his former unit to back up his story.
So what's your point? Kerry's a liberal and therefore must be lying about where he might have been Christmas 1968?
Dad BTW is a dyed-in-the-wool Republican. About as conservative as you can get. He was there. So what makes you so sure Kerry wasn't?
