Okay, let's see... positions. Again, I have to admit that I had to do some
research. Mainly because I did not want to make any false statements, but
also because I have never been a Gore supporter. I also know that spin can
be used in any number of ways and, depending on who you listen to, truth can
sometimes be "flexible".

But I do have to say that now I've heard it all! I may not have listened to
what Gore said, but I do know what I remember and, after double checking, I
want to bring up one statement that was made by Mr. Gore.

You may have been seeing on the television news the effects of this heat
wave on kids and old people and families and its really been very hot . . .
Because the atmosphere of the whole earth is warming up, it's more common
now to have these very, very hot days . . . And [the Republicans have] been
cutting that budget way back. I dont think most people in the country agree
with that. They want to use all the big surplus we have for a big risky tax
scheme. We think we ought to use some of it for these programs that will
help save the environment Reuters (8/2/99)

Now then, I want make a few points based on this statement. Smaller
government, in my eyes, means a smaller budget and less "red tape". "... we
ought to use some of it for these programs that will help save the
environment," for me translates directly to "let's try and get the
government involved in another program that will research a program to
develop a system to tell the colleges and research labs how to think about
reporting on the atmosphere." That's not making the current government
smaller.

Lower taxes? You think that he supported lowering our taxes? "They want to
use all the big surplus we have for a big risky tax scheme." If memory
serves, the Bush tax cut is 1.4 Trillion dollars over the next 10 years.
The Federal surplus will be in the HUNDREDS of trillions of dollars by the
time his tax cut takes full effect! The American people are getting less
than a tenth of the projected surplus back.

As far as the Environment... Gore's a HUGE fan of the environment. In his
book, "Earth In the Balance" he even talks about getting rid of the Internal
Combustion engine in "25 years or so". True, they are working on a hybrid
engine system as we speak and they get tremendous gas mileage, but even then
they need an internal combustion engine. What's even more interesting is
his "double-back" nature. Apparently in July 1999, millions of gallons of
water were released from a dam on the Connecticut River so that Gores canoe
would not scrape bottom during a photo op. In the meantime, residents around
the eastern seaboard were placed on water rations because of drought
conditions.

The only reference to the military that I could find was that he strongly
supported gays in the military. In reading what his stand was, it looks
even more "bend over backwards" than Clinton's position, and that one failed
miserably. I remember when that one came out, "Don't ask, don't tell."
Talk about a waste of training time!

Finally, of course Gore would be for welfare reform! It means that the
Government gets to run more people's lives. My wife baby-sits her cousin's
twin two year old girls and is paid by the State of New York. They told
her... TOLD her that she could not smoke in the same room that the girls are
in. They also told her that she could not smoke in the car. Granted, it
makes sense from a health viewpoint. Even more to the point, my wife and I
quit smoking over 6 months ago... but what law gives the government the
right to tell me what I can do in my own house?!

As I said in my previous post, I will grant that Gore helped the Internet
along in some way, but I also said "I
don't agree with that concept of "ignore the engineer behind the curtain"."
I also don't think Gore was the only person that helped.

All that being said, I'm going to go watch the leaves turn. Enjoy!
