I've been looking to buy a HD-based portable audio player, but I just don't quite see the solution I am looking for out on the market yet. I know there are a few fans of the iPod on the list, but one of the guys that works for me has had endless quality problems with his (he is on his 3rd unit in under a year) and that has made me wary of buying one.

There are lots of imitators out there- iRiver, Creative, Dell, etc. Sony has a couple of brand new models- a Network Walkman and a Vaio portable player- that look like they could be awesome (although they seem to use some proprietary audio format).

My questions:
- Do you own a portable audio player?
- If so, which one?
- What do you think of it?
- Have you heard any good or bad stories about particular products from people you know?
- What do you really want from one of these devices?

Here are my answers:
- I own a solid state mp3 player, 256 MB RAM iRiver. I have no HD-based player.
- I don't really use it, my wife does, but it's pretty good.
- Heard nightmare stories about iPod. Also heard great stories about iPod.
- I want one device with a phone, pda functionality, and a HD big enough to hold anything I want to carry around- 40 GB might be ok today, 80 GB would be better. I want it to support mp3 format, have a rechargable battery, USB  support as a removeable drive so I can store anything on it, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and video playback (which should be possible if the pda is iPaq/Pam style).

Am I nuts for wanting all of this? You tell me.
